María Gabriela Sosa
Maria Gabriela Sosa is one of the founding partners of BG Consulting. As Director and
then as Vice President of BG Consulting, she has been leading all projects related to
tax, Customs and trade matters. Her experience includes many Customs modernization
and trade facilitation projects in Central and South America under the financing of Inter
American Development Bank, World Bank, IFC and USAID. Ms. Sosa has drafted
several laws and participated in important legal reforms such as the Central American
Unified Code of Customs (CAUCA) and its Regulations (RECAUCA). She has also
led several projects in the areas of transparency and anticorruption, helping the Inter
American Development Bank to design the first Code of Conduct for Customs that was
later transformed into legislation and a model for countries worldwide.
More recently in Africa and Asia, she has participated in several World Bank projects
related to the improvement of the business climate, specifically in areas of tax and
Customs incentives, free trade zones, streamlining of procedures of trade and
investment and legal reform. In Laos, she is actively participating in the drafting of
legislation for Customs modernization and transparency.
Within the private sector, Ms. Sosa manages many of the BG Consulting clients,
especially in the areas of infrastructure and real estate. She has helped several Latin
American developers to find the right equity partners through her extensive network of
funds and investors.
Before joining BG Consulting, Ms. Sosa was a tax lawyer at the Caracas office of Baker
& McKenzie. Ms. Sosa's career has focused on the areas of taxation and Customs,
including litigation in both areas.
She received her law degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Universidad Católica Andrés
Bello in Venezuela in 1991. In the same year, she received an Excellency Award from
Fundación Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho and a scholarship for her Masters of Laws
(LL.M.), which she obtained from Harvard Law School in 1994.
Ms. Sosa is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Basketball
Association (IBA) as the Director of Latin American Affairs whose mission includes
developing the Live Right Play Right program throughout Central America.
She was Vice President of the Overlook Foundation and continues as Director and
Chairman of the Infrastructure Committee.
Ms. Sosa speaks fluent Spanish and English and intermediate French.
Maria Gabriela Sosa was born in Caracas, Venezuela on July 27, 1969, is married and
the mother of a daughter and a son.
